What's for Dinner? It's Summer! |
Thank you pack of expired eggs who wreaked havoc with our
household thanks to my misreading the date. Beware the silent but deadly, innocent-looking eggs that slumber in the corners of your fridge…
But onward now to much more exciting and less gastronomically
painful things…. THE LAST DAYS OF SCHOOL!!!!!
Are we there yet?
One and a half days left and my kids are already sleeping
in, consuming popsicles for their fruit quotient for the day, and avoiding
sunscreen protection like deft jack rabbits being chased by a coyote with a
fist full of SPF 50.
And what are these kids doing at school on these last days?
There seem to be field trips galore, half-day graduations at the local park,
full-day “field days” at school, and notes sent home about sending in board
games for the kids to play.
Methinks math and spelling have gone the way of the dodo
bird and quality network TV programming.
I can hear a communal sigh of relief wafting through the
entire kid-obsessive county of ours about less scheduling pressure, less
homework thrash, and more kick-back play time. Feel the anxiety slipping away,
fellow parents: no pink slips for being late for camp.
God bless summer. Bless the dirty feet, the sticky
watermelon covered faces, the rats-nest kids’ hairdos that haven’t been washed
with actual soap in a week ‘cept for daily romps in the pool – that’s almost
the same thing, right?
Bless the moldy family tents coming out of storage, the dead
flashlight batteries and the campfire BBQs with extra ketchup and mustard and
dirt.
Bless the long, sunny days. Bless the warm, evening fro-yo
walks. And, en fin, bless the fab camp counselors who tolerate, love, teach and
play in their own young, mentor-y way.
It feels good to be back.
Namaste & Three Cheers. Happy Summer. -A
